In this paper we engage in the pragmatic analysis of the last words of literary protagonists in line with the framework of the theory of speech acts. The material for the study was extracted from the works of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. In the analyzed examples of near-death words of literary protagonists prevail speech acts of directive and expressive types, while statements with assertive and declarative functions are less often used. On the other hand, due to the uniqueness of the speech situation, the commissions are completely absent.
